A Community of Faith with a place for YOU!
St. John’s is a community of those who seek to follow Jesus Christ. We are one body, part of the Body of Christ made up of Jesus’ followers all over the world, yet we value individual differences. There’s a place at Christ’s table for everyone. A place to belong…
At St. John’s you can find support and encouragement in all the challenges of life, join with others in worship and service, and be part of a face-to-face group where real sharing and trust are built. A place to believe…
At St. John’s you’re invited to grow in your faith and understanding of the life-giving good news of Jesus Christ.
Through sermons, study groups and experiences of many kinds, we continually deepen our “heart knowledge” as well as our “head knowledge,” letting God’s Word shape our lives. A place to become…
At St. John’s our goal is to become not members of an organization but disciples of Jesus Christ. Each one of us has gifts, skills and experiences that Christ can use to minister to others; he calls us to be part of his work in the world, sharing the good news in actions as well as in words.
Our goal is to be transformed by the love of Jesus Christ a love that reaches out beyond the walls of the church to all God’s children.
Our mission as United Methodists is stated in the 1996 Book of Discipline: "The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs." (p. 114)
The church seeks to develop a well-balanced ministry for all ages and stations in life. We are involved in children's and youth ministries so all will be drawn into connection with God. Our Christian education program is based on Sunday mornings and evenings, but also includes significant gatherings for study and covenant discipleship at other times.
There is a place for you at St. John's. Part of our history is yet to be written and we believe that the best is yet to be. Keep reading and see what God has in store for us together!
History
After receiving a generous gift of land from the late Jack Modesett, Mrs. Genevieve Modesett Clarke, and Guy Warren, St. John's United Methodist Church was chartered in April, 1955. The first meeting of the new congregation was in the old Osage Drive-In Theater in September, 1954. The church met for over a year in Fraser Elementary School, moving to Fellowship Hall at 5300 S. Alameda in October, 1956.
Two temporary buildings served as church school classes until the Ryan Building was built in 1958. In 1959, the men of the church supplied the labor to build the Scout Building. The first parsonage was at 753 Ashland, and the current parsonage at 702 Burkshire was built in 1963 The sanctuary and bell tower were built in 1969, following the campus style plan.
St. John's Administrative Building was built in 1986. The Fellowship Hall was remodeled in September 1997, and the Scout Hut was remodeled in the summer of 1998.
Our newest addition, the Community Life Building, was completed in June 2009; it includes a large multi-purpose room, nursery and kitchen.
