Mission Statement

Mission of Mercy, a nonprofit organization, seeks to restore dignity to all people by being an instrument of "Healing through Love," and by the reciprocal sharing of God’s mercy with those we serve.

Mission of Mercy is running its newest mobile healthcare program in the Coastal Bend area of south Texas. The new clinic is based out of Corpus Christi and serves 5 locations in Corpus Christi and surrounding rural areas, including unincorporated areas known as “colonias.” During the first year of operations the volunteers at our mobile clinic expect to provide over 3,000 free patient visits and dispense over 5,000 free prescription medications to the uninsured working poor.

Mission of Mercy’s new clinics in the Coastal Bend area are the result of nearly two years of effort. In August 2005, the Most Reverend Edmond Carmody, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi, invited Mission of Mercy to locate a mobile health clinic in the Corpus Christi area to serve the thousands of area poor that have no health insurance and can not afford to see a doctor or to purchase the medications they need. Mission of Mercy Foundress, Dr. Gianna Talone-Sullivan, Pharm.D., traveled to Corpus Christi and witnessed first-hand the need for Mission of Mercy to provide free healthcare that focuses on the restoration of dignity, what we call “Healing through Love.” (Read More)

Finding Hope Beyond The Battle

is an NIV translation that includes stories of military spouses and the fear, hope, loneliness, and other challenges they face.

The hope is this translation will help in the healing process of our “wounded warriors” as well as become a source of strength and hope for all of our military families.

Steve and Karen Dorner, of University UMC in San Antonio, have joined with Bishop Joel N. Martinez, to provide a copy of this Bible, along with a list of other available resources, to the military families in our local churches.

If you are one of St. John’s military families and you are interested in receiving your complimentary copy of this Bible please make an indication on the attendance registration pad.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
All AT&T owned wireless store locations nationwide will become wireless phone recycling drop-off sites for a charitable program that benefits U.S. military families. In addition, AT&T is donating more than 30,000 prepaid phone cards — valued at more than $270,000 — to the nonprofit organization to help connect more U.S. military families. AT&T is also providing the nonprofit with a new volume discount for purchasing additional phone cards. Cell Phones for Soldiers has a website at: www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com. This is a nonprofit organization that collects and recycles used cell phones and uses the proceeds to purchases prepaid phone cards for military families. Mission Matters

Partners in a Covenant Relationship

We at St. John’s have very special ties to the people of the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC). One such connection is through our involvement in the
special Covenant Relationship Program with Gaston and Jeanne Ntambo, “our”
missionaries who are deeply committed to the Wings of the Morning ministry in
Congo. The Covenant Relationship Program is one way the General Board of
Global Ministries makes it possible for United Methodist congregations to
surround our mission personnel with love and prayer, and to participate in their
work through financial and prayerful support.

We would pray that through having the Ntambos in our midst this past week,
both we and they—the partners in this covenant relationship— will be strengthened.

Thanks to all who helped make the visit of Gaston, Jeanne, and their youngest
child, Eileen, such a wonderful experience for us all—the Mission Committee for
coordinating the visit, to all who hosted the family in such a variety of ways, to
United Methodist Women for hosting Friday’s luncheon, and to Gaston, Jeanne,
and Eileen for the many ways in which they shared the mission story and
deepened our ties with the wonderful folks of DRC.

Sister Relationship with Kinkunki Methodist Church in Kamina

As part of St. John’s World Communion Day Service in 2006, we celebrated
our special Sister Relationship with our brothers and sisters of the Kinkunki
Methodist Church in Kamina, Democratic Republic of Congo. As a part of that
service, we heard the moving testimonies of our new friends in that church.

click to enlargeAt St. John’s special Pentecost Worship on May 27 with Gaston Ntambo as our guest speaker, an altar cloth was dedicated. Gaston will take the altar cloth to the Kinkunki Church as a gift from St. John’s. This altar cloth was a joint venture of Jo Anne Wilshusen and Louise Wagner, with Louise being the artisan in the venture. Pastor Ilgha, who visited St John’s in 2006 and serves as our liaison with the Kinkunki church, has been alerted and asked to take the altar cloth when it arrives back in Kamina and present it to the Kinkunki congregation.

Pastor Ilgha recently married (see photo).

DRC Missionaries Are Welcomed!

How wonderful to welcome Gaston and Jeanne Ntambo of the Democratic Republic of Congo and to hear their witness this past week about the Wings of the Morning ministry in the Congo.

Gaston preached at all three services on Pentecost Sunday, May 27, and the family was warmly greeted and entertained by several St. John’s families, through the efforts of the Mission Committee. The United Methodist Women hosted a luncheon on May 25 at the church, and Gaston showed a brief video about the ministry and answered questions.

The Ntambos were accompanied by their daughter, Eileen, the youngest of the couple’s five children. Church members can communicate with the couple at gastontambo@yahoo.com or Wings of the Morning, PO Box 20219, Kitwe, Zambia.

Gaston Nkulu Ntambo

photo of Gaston Nkulu NtamboGaston Nkulu Ntambo is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Based in Luena, Gaston serves as a pilot and mechanic with the Wings of the Morning flight ministry in the North Katanga Conference.

The aviation ministry provides transportation in hard-to-reach areas of Africa, especially in emergency situations. Reflecting on his work, Gaston says, “I believe God is using me as a tool to reach out and save lives.” He recalls that he once flew unknowingly into a war zone in an attempt to save lives. “As a miracle, the highest officer in that village on that day happened to also be my uncle,” he reports. “Out of nowhere, he suddenly introduced himself to me for the first time.”

A native of Kamina, DRC, he earned associate degrees in accounting and piloting from Davis College in Toledo, OH. He received a mechanic's certificate from the Michigan Institute of Aeronautics in Detroit. Prior to his commissioning as a GBGM missionary, Gaston worked six years as a Wings of the Morning pilot. He previously served as an assistant and secretary with the United Methodist Church in Lumbumbashi, DRC.

Gaston is married to Jeanne Kabove Ntambo, also a GBGM missionary. They have four children: Andy Nkulu and Lorree Nkulu, both 5; Gabriel Kahenga, 3; and Noah Kabove, 1. Gaston's father is Bishop Ntambo Nkulu of the North Katanga Conference. Gaston is a member of a local United Methodist church in Luena.

Gaston Nkulu Ntambo is available for Covenant Relationship support in Central Texas Annual Conference,  North Texas Annual Conference,  West Ohio Annual Conference.

Jeanne Kabove Ntambo

Jeanne Kabove Ntambo is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Based in Luena, Jeanne serves as a radio operator for the Wings of the Morning ministry in the North Katanga Conference.

Wings of the Morning is an aviation ministry that provides transportation to remote areas of Africa, especially in emergency situations. Jeanne follows the flight paths for planes involved in the ministry. “I believe God has called me into his ministry by making me available at all times, even when I am busy with my four children.” She notes that there are no air traffic controllers or weather reporting stations in many of the areas that Wings of the Morning serves, which makes pilots all-the-more dependent on her services. “Through God's power, I have had an experience of saving pilots' and passengers' lives,” she testifies.

A native of Kalemie, DRC, Jeanne earned an associate degree in accounting from the Institut Kitumaini and an associate's in economics from the University of Lubumbashi, both in Lubumbashi. She received a diploma in accounting from Institut Kitokeji in Kamina. She has been with the flight ministry since 1996.

Her parents are Kahenga-Mwenda Ferdinard and Muzinga Habamutake Marie of Katuba, Lubumbash, where they are members of Saint Sebastien Catholic Church.

Jeanne Kabove Ntambo is available for Covenant Relationship support in Central Texas Annual Conference,  North Texas Annual Conference,  West Ohio Annual Conference.
